Germane | Reverence Barrel Works
Score: 89/100 - Excellent
From a 473ml can served cold at 6 degrees Celsius into a TeKu glass. No date information on the packaging but I picked up this beer straight from the brewery just a few days ago and it's my understanding this is a fresh batch. I've been happy with the brewery's offerings so far and I'm excited to try another style by them with above average expectations.
Appearance (6/6)
The beer pours a clear gold with 3cm of rocky, creamy, white head which dissipates into a craggy cap within 3+ minutes. Good lacing and head retention. Great appearance: classic beer looks!
Aroma (20/24)
Moderate intensity with good balance. The aroma is clean, nuanced, and graceful. Moderate floral notes along with low hay and a spoonful of honey. A little bit of breakfast cereal. A touch of herbal character adding a green tea layer when paired with the floral character. A hint of apple. The dry nose is reminiscent of honey and light floral notes.
Flavour (36/40)
Follows the aroma with moderate intensity, great balance, and moderate perceived bitterness. The palate opens up with light floral and herbal tones making way for a malt-focused center where a soft, grainy-sweet malt (raw barley + honey) is rounded off by the herbaceous, floral hops. The medium-length finish is faint and balanced with notes of jasmine tea, honey, raw barley, and green plants (grassy).
Mouthfeel (10/10)
Medium body with moderate carbonation. The mouthfeel is very smooth and creamy with no apparent alcohol warming and a medium-dry finish. No astringency or harshness on the palate. Very good.
Overall (17/20)
Reverence Barrel Works' Germane is an excellent beer. Classic appearance with pleasant, nuanced aroma and polished flavour. Creamy-smooth on the palate leaving a fresh, clean feel on the tongue. I highly recommend this to most beer drinkers as it's a beautiful everyday beer that can be enjoyed frequently. Helles is not a loud beer and Reverence has done well representing the style. Clearly they're not a one-trick pony, but a well-versed establishment. I'm looking forward to all the things they have to offer.
